Investment so far
A total of £446m has been invested in the renewal and maintenance of Metro infrastructure since work began in 2010.
Metro infrastructure modernisation work includes:
- 46 new Metro trains built, with all trains in service by the end of 2026
- 35 stations refurbished
- 65km of track renewed or refurbished
- 52 switches and crossing renewed or refurbished
- 52 sets of points motors replaced
- 6.5km of track drainage installed
- 33km of cable troughing refurbished
- 85km of signalling cable replaced
- 62 bridges structurally repaired
- 3 bridges completely replaced or replaced
- 5 bridges removed in their entirety and infilled
- 27 escalators and 12 lifts replaced
- A new rail tamping machine bought
- 2km of earthworks repaired through ballast retention and stabilisation
- 65km of overhead line replaced
- Replacement of help points, the public address system and 500 CCTV cameras
- A new Radio System installed
- A new Rail Traffic Management System (RTMS) installed
- In addition to that, the Metro Flow project was a £104m investment, dualling the Metro track in three areas in South Tyneside.
