Travelling to the Stadium of Light

Home of Sunderland Association Football Club.

The Stadium of Light is the home of Sunderland AFC. The stadium is located near the River Wear, North West of the Wearmouth Bridge in Sunderland.

There are numerous ways to travel to Sunderland including main line rail services, national coach services, local bus services and Metro.

Metro travel

The Tyne and Wear Metro is a public light rail rapid transport system which operates over and underground across Tyne and Wear. There are 60 stations on the network.  Serving Newcastle city centre, Sunderland city centre, Newcastle Airport and the seafronts at North and South Tyneside.  

St Peter’s and Stadium of Light stations are the closest to Stadium of Light.

Walking routes

From St Peter’s station: About an 8 minute walk.

Leave the station onto Sheepfolds. Turn first right onto Hay Street and follow this road to Millenium Way. The stadium will be in front of you.

From Stadium of Light station: About a 9 minute walk.

Leave the station (large car park will be on your left). Turn left onto Newcastle Road, and follow the road until you see the large junction. Turn right onto Rosebery Street and then cross Southwick Road. You’ll see the stadium in front of you.

Metro tickets can be purchased on the day of travel from any Metro station. Ticket machines accept cash and card payments. Ticket machine information screens translate into 6 languages. If you’re travelling with children, up to three children aged 11 and under can travel free with every fare paying adult.

Using a POP Pay As You Go card to travel on Metro will save you money (compared to buying paper tickets).  You touch in at the start of your journey (on the yellow validator or gateline) and out at the end of your journey and you get charged the cheapest fare for your journey.

Rail travel

Sunderland station for main line rail services, the station is located in Sunderland city centre and has mainline rail links throughout England and Scotland. Some rail services to/from Sunderland station connect at Newcastle station. Metro services also stop at Sunderland station (platform 3 towards Newcastle and platform 2 towards South Hylton). 

Walking route to the stadium from Sunderland station: About an 18 minute walk.

Exit the station and head to Fawcett Street, then follow the road towards Monkwearmouth Bridge. At the crossroads next to the bridge use either the pedestrian crossings or underpass to access the bridge. Cross the bridge and you’ll see St Peter’s Metro station on your left. Walk under the bridge next to the Metro station up Sheepfolds. Turn first right onto Hay Street and follow the road to Millenium Way. The stadium will be in front of you.

Bus travel

There are also local bus services that stop around the ground. Tickets can be purchased direct from bus drivers on the day of travel. Commercial bus operators in Tyne & Wear, Northumberland and County Durham can also be purchased via their own dedicated apps.

National Coach travel

National coach services arrive into Park Lane Interchange located in Sunderland city centre. You can connect to local bus services or to Metro at Park Lane Interchange to travel to the Stadium of Light. The Stadium of Light is in walking distance of the Interchange (about a 20 minute walk).

Walking route to the stadium from Park Lane Interchange (about a 25 minute walk)

Head onto Park Lane and follow this road for two minutes. Turn right onto Holmeside and follow for a further two minutes onto Fawcett Street.

Continue on Fawcett Street towards Monkwearmouth Bridge, and at the crossroads next to the bridge use either the pedestrian crossing or underpass to access the bridge. Cross the bridge and you’ll see St Peter’s Metro station on your left. Walk under the bridge next to the Metro station up Sheepfolds, turn first right onto Hay Street and follow the road to Millenium Way. The stadium will be in front of you.

Travelling to and from Newcastle International Airport

Airport Metro station is attached to Newcastle International Airport.  There is a frequent Metro service that runs directly from Airport to Sunderland city centre.  The journey takes about 55 minutes.

Travelling to and from Newcastle International Ferry Terminal

The International Ferry Terminal is located within walking distance of both Meadow Well and Percy Main Metro stations. There frequent Metro services running from Meadow Well and Percy Main into Newcastle Centre where you can transfer to a Sunderland bound Metro train.

There is a dedicated bus service, the number 327, which runs in coordination to Ferry arrivals and departures that runs direct to and from Newcastle City Centre. The 327 drops off on Bewick Street, which is within walking distance of Monument Metro station where you can get a Metro to Sunderland.
