What is a Metro Penalty Fare?
A Penalty Fare is a fine given to anyone travelling on the Tyne and Wear Metro system without a valid ticket. This could include a Pop card that has not been validated for the journey, using a ticket that does not apply to you, or simply travelling without a ticket at all.
How much does a Penalty Fare cost?
A Penalty Fare is £100 plus the price of the full single fare for your intended journey.
However if it is paid within 21 days, the Penalty Fare is reduced to £50 plus the price of the single fare.
If you fail to pay the Penalty Fare you may be prosecuted and if you were convicted you may have to pay a financial penalty.
