Travelling to 1st Cloud Arena

Home of South Shields Football Club

1st Cloud Arena is the home of South Shields Football Club. The arena is located on Shaftesbury Avenue, South Shields, NE32 3UP. There are local bus services and a Metro service that can get you to the ground.

Metro travel

The Tyne and Wear Metro is a public light rail rapid transport system which operates over and underground across Tyne and Wear.  There are 60 stations on the network.  Serving Newcastle city centre, Sunderland city centre, Newcastle Airport and the seafronts at North and South Tyneside.  

Bede station is the closest to South Shields Football Club.  If you’re travelling from South Shields, board any train.  If you’re travelling from Newcastle board a South Shields train.  If you’re travelling from Sunderland board any train and change to a South Shields train at Pelaw station platform 1.

Walking route

From Bede station: About a 6 minute walk.

If you have left a train heading towards South Shields (platform 1) leave the station and turn right (under the rail bridge).

If you have left a train heading towards Newcastle (platform 2) leave the station and turn left.

Follow the road to the next junction and turn right, then it’s a short walk along Shaftsbury Avenue, you’ll see the 1st Cloud Arena on your right.

Metro tickets can be purchased on the day of travel from any Metro station. Ticket machines accept cash and card payments. Ticket machine information screens translate into 6 languages.  If you’re travelling with children, up to three children aged 11 and under can travel free with every fare paying adult.

Using a POP Pay As You Go card to travel on Metro will save you money (compared to buying paper tickets). You touch in at the start of your journey (on the yellow validator or gateline) and out at the end of your journey and you get charged the cheapest fare for your journey.

The Shields Ferry

The Shields Ferry is a passenger ferry service on the River Tyne, connecting the local communities of North and South Tyneside. Local buses serve the ferry landings either side of the river and Metro stations are located nearby.

If you travel to the South Shields Ferry landing, you can connect with local bus services or to the Metro at the South Shields Interchange to travel to the football ground. 

Rail travel

Newcastle station and Sunderland station have mainline rail links throughout England and Scotland.  You can connect to Metro services from Park Lane Interchange and from stations in Newcastle city centre.

Bus travel

There are local bus services that stop near to the football club. Tickets can be purchased direct from bus drivers on the day of travel. Commercial bus operators in Tyne & Wear, Northumberland and County Durham can also be purchased via their own dedicated apps.

National Coach travel

There are two main coach arrival points in central Newcastle:

  • National Express bus station on St James Boulevard
  • Megabus and Flixbus on John Dobson Street

National coach services also serve Sunderland, arriving at Park Lane Interchange located in the city centre.  You can connect to Metro services from Park Lane Interchange and from stations in Newcastle city centre.
