Bikes and scooters on Metro
All you need to know about taking bicycles and scooters on the Tyne and Wear Metro.
Taking a bike or scooter on Metro can be a great way to travel around the area, whether you’re commuting for work or heading for a fun day out.
Ride safe – always dismount your bike on approaching the Metro station and never ride your bike in stations or on platforms.
Cycle storage
All Metro stations have cycle storage at them or (in city centres and at Airport) somewhere close by. Simply leave your bike securely locked to one of the cycle racks or Streetpods and continue with your journey by Metro.
At some stations like Monument or Haymarket, ‘Sheffield stands’ – metal loops that bikes can be locked onto – are provided by the local Council on the street outside the station.
The full list of cycle storage options for each Metro station is available lower down this page.
Folding cycles
Bikes are allowed on Metro at any time if fully folded (including e-bikes).
If you have a folding cycles that have handlebars and pedals which stick out, place them in a bag while on Metro. The bag should be robust enough to prevent handlebars and pedals causing injury to other passengers.
Non-folding cycles
Non folding cycles (including folding e-bikes) can be taken onto stations and trains between Callerton Parkway-Jesmond, Manors-Jesmond (via Whitley Bay), Gateshead Stadium-South Shields/South Hylton during the following times:
- Monday to Friday 10.00am-3.00pm
- Monday to Friday 7.00pm until end of service
- All day at weekends
Each Metro train has designated storage areas for bikes. The space will also be used by wheelchair users and customers with pushchairs. Priority must always be given to wheelchair users and customers with pushchairs.
Bikes are not allowed at Airport, St James or between Haymarket and Gateshead station.
Folding scooters
Are allowed on Metro at any time if fully folded.
Electric scooters and electric unicycles
These are not allowed on Metro stations or trains or on the Shields Ferry at any time.
