More than 115 million journeys are made by bus across the North East every year. Yet many communities have seen services reduced over time, with fewer routes and less frequent buses.
The North East Mayoral Strategic Authority (North East MSA) is asking people across the region to have their say on proposals that could bring buses under public control. This is through a franchising model, similar to those used in London and Manchester. The proposals could help create a more reliable, better connected and easier to use bus network. This could include simpler fares, consistent standards, improved information and a stronger voice for local people.
The consultation asks people to think of the responsibilities and risks that come with franchising. This includes the North East MSA taking on greater financial responsibility for the bus network.
Whether you use the bus every day, occasionally, or would like to use it more in the future, this is your opportunity to help shape the future of bus services across our region.
The consultation closes at 9am on 28 September 2026.
