The Light

The Light, located in the heart of Durham and formerly known as the site of the Durham Light Infantry (DLI) Museum and Art gallery will be open to the public on 22 August 2026 after a £17m redevelopment.

The Light represents a major investment in creativity, culture, learning and community and will be a dynamic, multipurpose cultural venue.

Visitors will be able to experience internationally significant exhibitions including the upcoming exhibition of spectacular international light art, Victory Over The Sun: Encounters with Light running from opening until 17 January 2027, as well as the permanent exhibition on the Durham Light Infantry, We Are The Durhams.

Enjoy a single bus journey across the region at £2.50 max and day tickets at £7.50 for unlimited travel with the Mayor’s Fares to experience The Light.
