Children Travel Free This August with Great British Summer Savings

The UK Government has announced that children aged 5-15 can travel free on participating buses across England throughout August, as part of its Great British Summer Savings initiative. Running from 1 to 31 August 2026, the scheme is designed to help families with the cost of days out this summer. Children must be accompanied by a fare-paying adult, and the offer applies to bus services only.

For families in the North East, our own Kids Go Free offer continues to run as normal alongside the national scheme – up to three children aged 11 and under travel free with a fare-paying adult during the school holidays on buses, and all day every day on the Tyne and Wear Metro and Shields Ferry.

Looking for somewhere to go? With Days Out by Bus, families can pair free travel with days out at attractions across the North East from museums and castles to coastal favourites, all easy to reach by bus, with discounted entry available at participating venues. Participation in Great British Summer Savings is voluntary, and so passengers are advised to check with their operator before travelling. To find out more about how you could benefit from Great British Summer Savings, visit summersavings.gov.uk
