Cyclists take bikes on the Shields Ferry

Bikes and scooters on the Shields Ferry

All you need to know about taking bicycles and scooters on the Shields Ferry.

Nexus welcomes cyclists on the Shields Ferry, with no extra charge for bringing your bike. Whether they are part of your commute or the river crossing forms part of your cycling adventure, thousands of cyclists use the Shields Ferry every year.

Electric bikes (e-bikes) are also allowed on the Shields Ferry – unless they have been modified or are in an unsafe condition.

Electric scooters are not permitted on the Shields Ferry (or Metro stations or trains) at any time.

Under normal circumstances, if a group of cyclists plan to use the ferry together (eg for a charity bike ride), the ferry can accommodate about 16 bikes. Please notify Nexus Customer Relations team in advance by visiting the contact page

Important note:
For the safety of all of our customers, do not ride your bike on the ferry landings. Dismount your bike at the entrance to the ferry landing, and walk with it along the landing itself and onto the ferry.  Do not ride your bike again until you have reached the road or cycle path on the other side of the river.

For guides and information about cycling in the area, Cycling UK have a dedicated page to cycling in Tyne and Wear.

If you’re planning on taking your bike on Tyne and Wear Metro, see what the rules are on taking bikes on Metro.
