If you have an English National Concessionary Travel Pass (CT Pass), you can buy a Metro Gold Card which gives you unlimited travel on Metro, the Shields Ferry and Northern Rail services between Newcastle and Sunderland from 9.30am Monday-Friday, all day at weekends, on public holidays and throughout July and August.

What is a Metro Gold Card?
If you have a Concessionary Travel Pass (CT Pass), you can buy a Metro Gold Card which gives you a year’s travel on Metro, the Shields Ferry and on Northern Rail services between Newcastle and Sunderland.
When and where can I use a Metro Gold Card?
If you’re a Tyne and Wear CT Pass holder and buy a Metro Gold Card, you can travel on Metro, the Shields Ferry and Northern Rail services between Newcastle and Sunderland at the same times as your CT Pass is valid.
Gold cards are not valid in zone D (Northumberland Line).
Off Peak CT Pass – You can travel from 9.30am Monday to Friday, all day on weekends and public holidays. You can also use your Metro Gold Card all day between Christmas, New Year and throughout July and August. These are the times CT Pass holders from outside Tyne and Wear can travel using their Metro Gold Card too.
All Day CT Pass – You can travel at any time if you have an All Day Tyne and Wear CT Pass. Metro Gold Cards on All Day CT Passes issued by other local authorities aren’t valid all day on Metro, the Shields Ferry and Northern Rail services between Newcastle and Sunderland.
How much is a Metro Gold Card?
The price of a Metro Gold Card depends on where you live. Tyne and Wear CT Pass holders can travel on Metro for a year for just £15. If you live outside Tyne and Wear it costs £24 a year.
Please note that your Metro Gold Card is non-refundable.
How to buy a Metro Gold Card?
You can buy your Metro Gold Card online at buyandapply.nexus.org.uk (Tyne and Wear CT Pass holders only) and then load it on to your CT Pass at any Metro station gate, validator or ticket machine or you can buy your Metro Gold Card and load it on to your CT Pass at any Metro station ticket machine. This can be done up to seven days before your current pass expires.
Here’s how to buy a Metro Gold Card:
- Simply touch your CT Pass on the orange card reader and your ticket details will appear on the screen.
- Select the ‘Metro tickets’ button. Then the ‘Gold Card’ option.
- Press the ‘Buy’ button. You can pay for your ticket using cash, card or contactless.
- To update your CT Pass, touch the pass on the orange card reader again. A message will appear to tell you it’s been updated. If you don’t put your pass back on the reader, your new Metro Gold Card won’t be loaded.
How do I use a Metro Gold Card?
- On Metro – Using your Metro Gold Card is easy. You simply need to touch in and out at the start and end of your journey using the Metro station gates or validators. If a Metro station has gates, touch your CT pass on the orange card reader. If a Metro station has a validator, touch your Metro Gold Card on to it when you’re entering or leaving the station –you’ll hear a beep and see a message on the screen.
- On the Shields Ferry – Simply show the ferry operator your CT Pass when you board.
- On Northern Rail services between Newcastle and Sunderland – To use Northern trains, simply show your CT Pass to Northern Rail staff
Can I use my Gold Card to travel to early hospital appointments?
Yes. If you have an Off Peak CT Pass with a Metro Gold Card on it, and you need to travel before 9.30am to get to a hospital appointment, just show your hospital appointment card or letter with your CT Pass when requested.
What happens if I lose my CT Pass with my Gold Card on it?
If you’ve lost your CT Pass, you should report this to Nexus immediately by logging in to your online account at nexus. org.uk or by getting in touch with our Customer Service Team. You’ll be issued with a new CT Pass, but a £5 charge applies for a replacement pass, and you’ll need to buy a new Metro Gold Card. Your new Metro Gold Card will be valid for 365 days from the day of purchase and won’t expire on the date of the original Metro Gold Card you’ve lost.
How can I check when my Gold Card expires?
You can check the expiry date by logging in to your online account at nexus.org.uk or at any Metro station ticket machine by touching your CT Pass on the orange reader. You can also check your expiry date by downloading the ‘Pop app’ (by visiting Google Play).
What happens if my CT Pass expires in less than a year?
If your CT Pass is due to expire in less than a year, or you have a Tyne and Wear Disabled Temporary CT Pass, you can buy a Metro Gold Card for the period until your CT Pass expires, at a reduced price online at nexus.org.uk (Tyne and Wear CT Pass holders only) or at a Metro station ticket machine. The price and duration will be worked out automatically for you, and added to your CT pass. The cost is £1 per month (or part of a month) if you live in Tyne and Wear, and £2 if you don’t.
When can I renew my Metro Gold Card?
You can renew your Gold Card up to 7 days before your current pass expires.
Who can use my Gold Card?
Only you can use your Metro Gold Card and it isn’t transferable. If you have a Companion CT Pass, you may travel accompanied by one person. However, the pass is for you and your companion only.
